What is Google Gears?

There are some exciting technological developments taking place that should result in improvements to users experiences when using web based applications. One of these is Google Gears. Currently in beta testing Google Gears installs both a web server and a local, lightweight database engine (SQLite) on the users computer. With these components installed locally it becomes possible for appropriately written web applications to operate from a users computer as if they were operating online.
